RAPAPORT... Gem and jewelry exports from Thailand came in at $4.53 billion for the first seven months of 2008. According to the Thai Gem & Jewelry Traders Association the projected annual increase by the end of the year was targeted at 20 percent or $5.92 billion, which now looks easy to beat by nearly $2 billion.

Vichai Assarasakorn, president of the association, praised the industry's efforts and said, "Sales to new markets such as China, India, the Middle East and Russia are outstanding. Shipments to those markets have seen more than a 100 percent increase to each one."

A political showdown underway in Thailand has had no real impact on trade or the attendance at the 42nd Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair. The event expected 3,149 exhibitors and 30,000 visitors before closing on September 15.

"We have consistently explained to exhibitors Thailand's political situation and the venue is far from the protest areas," he said, adding to his knowledge no one canceled plans to attend the show.
