Laos to open first casino complex on Thai Border

Lao's first casino is to be opened on the border with Thailand in Savannakhet. The complex will include a casino, a five-star hotel with 160 rooms, restaurants, an amusement park, an aqua-park and a traditional spa service centre.The project is a joint venture between a Thai and Laos consortium should see a major increase in tourism to Savannakhet Province is Laos. The nearest border point at Mukdahan has been become increasingly popular since the Friendship Bridge opened and made border crossings easier.

The casino and entertainment complex is just one of the many such venues which have been built in countries surrounding Thailand. Thailand has strict anti-gambling laws, so Thai investors have been eager to get involved in projects which allow Thais to cross international borders and gamble their money.

Malaysia, Myanmar and Cambodia have all built similar facilities. The latest venture in Laos is expected to open in November.
